Early design proposals for an extension to a listed house in Barley

  • October 2017

The scheme provides a series of linked spaces that step down to follow the slope of the site, to provide a new dining room and living room within a light and airy interior of varying height and dimension. The back wall of the existing house, against which a new staircase rises, plays an important part in the overall composition. Exposed timber beams and rafters support a mono-pitch roof that refers back to the timber-framed medieval hall and a continuous glazed roof at the junction with the house brings natural light to the back of the space to ensure decent lighting levels in the original rooms.”

Consent to Demolish Grade II* Listed Building

  • September 2017

NRAP are delighted to announce that we have received planning and listed building consent, on behalf of Christ’s Hospital School, for the development of a 20,000 square foot new catering facility at their campus near Horsham. The new building will provide a food and nutrition department, as well as facilities for the production of over 800,000 meals per year and a much needed new entrance court to the campus.

It is no small achievement to be given permission to demolish a large part of a Grade II* Listed building; made possible not only by the quality of the design, but also by the vision and leadership provided by the School. The facility will replace the original grade II* listed Aston Webb-designed building, which had been much altered, but which Conservation Officers had previously sought to preserve. NRAP’s designs received support from Historic England who said, “The design is articulated in a contemporary way that would provide a fitting first impression of this important school complex. The proposal includes public realm improvements around the new building which represents a substantial improvement on the current situation.”
